Story Telling Ability
I think that with songs like "You must Love Me," "Friend or Foe," "Friend or Foe '98," "Coming of Age," "Coming of Age Da Sequel," "Dope Man," "Song Cry," "Meet The Parents," and "99 Problems" the man has basically established himself as a master story teller. When listening to all of the stories just listed, I can not only vividly see everything that he says within the story, but I can empathize with the characters within it (whether they be real or fictitious). Jay-z truly just has a way with words, and seems to understand that every word can have several meanings. This is why he is such a good rapper in my opinion; he can say something that can have distinct meanings in two completely different subjects, and make it so that both ideas are completely fluid.

Flow
Jay-z truly has mastered that art of flow (or measure). There is not a kind of beat that he has not rapped over perfectly. With up tempo beats like "I cant get with that," "Ni**a What, Ni**a Who," and "Poppin' Tags" he shows that he can rhyme with the speed of Twista with a similar ability for fitting multi-sylable words into perfect progression along and in between the high hat. Jay-z also displays his complex flow in "My First Song" by rapping over a triplet driven beat with perfect ease, while representing through the abstract sound of the song the way in which his flow may have been during his real first song. I cannot emphasize enough Jay-z's incredible flow. I feel that any Jay-z song is a perfect representation of his skill for flowing. I cannot name enough songs for which he flows great over, because he flows great over everything.

Voice and Emotion
This is a more preferential category out of all, however I really like Jay-z’s voice. Emotionally, because he does not write any lyrics down on paper and he records them successfully in one take, I think that his emotions are always perfect about whatever topic he raps about.

Rhyming
This may be where the biggest conflict arises between those who commend Jay-z and with those who do not. While he does not often Rhyme off of the same sound repeatedly throughout a verse, I think that his lyrics have much more meaning as a result. Hip-Hop Magazine, The Source, once used Jay-z's "Izzo" in their quotable section. After the quotation they wrote, "Sometimes a simple rhyme can say so much." I think that this idea is the quintessence of his lyrical presence. Jay-z has mastered the art of conveying his thoughts perfectly so that anyone and everyone can understand him. In addition, a deeper substantial message is also present for a more analytical listener.

Punch Lines
Jay-z has gotten to be so good at throwing punch lines in his music, that sometimes the listener will not recognize it until a few lines, or even a few listens later. In "Heart of the City," Jay-z said "Bird ass ni**as, I don't mean to ruffle ya'll/ I know you waitin' in the wing, but I'm doin' my thing/." I think that this metaphor of birds to haters represents the ease in which he can throw out a punch line that is more complicated then how it first sounds. For simpler punch lines, he is great too. In the song "Cashmere Thoughts" he lets off a string of blunt but yet extremely clever punches such as on the song “Cashmere Thoughts,” “I talk jewels and spit diamonds/ all cherry like a hymen, when I'm rhymin’ with remarkable timin'/." Another example is from the song "D'Evils" where he says, "My hand around her collar, feeding her cheese/ She said the taste of dollars was shitty so I fed her fifties/ About his whereabouts, I wasn't convinced/ So I kept feedin’ her money 'til her shit started to make sense/." He is extremely witty and clever.

Production
With Producers having his back like The Neptunes, Kanye West (Used to Be on Rocafella before the CEO’s went their own way), Just Blaze, and The Neptunes, he has the support of all current greats. Not only does he have their support, but they also admit to giving Jay their best beats because they respect him so much and know that he will take the songs to their potential. Even before these producers, he has worked with classic producers like Ski, Dr. Dre, Timbaland, DJ Quik, DJ Premiere, DJ Clark Kent and Rick Rubin. Overall, I consider Jay-z’s beats to be close to flawless.

Freestyle Ability
The Freestyle in the modern hip-hop world is perceived much differently as compared to older freestyles. It was not so long ago that an MC was expected to come off the top of the dome when he was "freestyling." Over the past 10 years or so, freestyling has become a preview of verses that you will hear on an artist’s album. This is no different when you're talking about Jay-Z. The thing that sets him apart in my mind from the others is his claim that he doesn't write any of his rhymes down to begin with; it is all in his head. That means to me that he is always working on a rhyme, and always pondering his next bar. In essence Jay lives his rhymes, so when he goes to a radio station and spits something, it is a freestyle. When he goes to the studio to do a song, it is freestyle. In 1997 Jay spit this verse along side of Sauce Money over P Diddy's (then Puff Daddy’s) famed "All About the Benjamins" beat:

Whenever ya'll ni**as are ready for war, just let it be known/
This is my word, I give it my all to the death of me homes/
In 97, we doing whatever it takes to make the most money/
Doing jux, even turned crooks we taking your money, its off the hook/
Don't believe ya'll can defeat me wit looks/
Never that, want it no more ni**as, Study ya books… never act/
I never lack, forever pack, pull the lever back and squeeze/
For the simple fact, when ya lungs collapse its hard to breath/
How could you possibly stop me, I'm approximately/
A million overhead and I'm about to double it...What the fuck/

Battle Ability
Way before Hot 97’s 2001 Summer Jam, Jay-Z was known for
battling. It has been rumored that Jay has battled hip-hop legends Big Daddy Kane, LL Cool J, and even the Genius (GZA) way before he even released his first album Reasonable Doubt. His battle skills were not really chronicled until he decided to respond to all the shots he had been taking from other rappers since becoming the self proclaimed
“King of NY.” We all know what happened in the fall of 2001; the biggest media covered, true battle in all of hip-hop history occurred: Jay-z Vs. Nas. This battle made it impossible to be a fan of both artists during that time period. It was so
big that to this day we do not definitively know who won. Although there is much speculation that Nas won because of his diss track “Ether,” many say that he is only qualified as the winner because he gave a response to Jay-z who gave the first real diss track, “Takeover.” It remains even today to be a very popular topic among hip hop fans

Street's disciple, I rock beats that's mega trifle

2009-05-21 20:11
Street Credibility
Jay-z's street legend status at the beginning of his career was unparalleled by any other rapper during that time. It was well known that Jay, unlike most rappers, created his own record deal. "I ain’t one of you rappers that got a deal
I'm one of the few ~~~~~s spittin it and got it for real." Jay claims that he amassed over $900, 000 from selling drugs in the song “You Don’t Know,” “I came into this
mothafucka 100 grand strong, 9 to be exact from grindin’ G packs/.” No one in rap has challenged this claim nor has there really ever been any talk of how Jay has fabricated any of the street stories he's spit over the past 9 years. I do recall a certain point in Jay-Z's career when he could pretty much record any type of track and the streets would still respect him for it. Case in point, the song “Jigga my Ni**a” is a very hard record beat wise and Jay spits his usual bravado, however overall its also a very radio friendly song. I can remember thinking to myself when that song came out that only Jay could get away with a song like that

Gimmick (if their is one)
The only real gimmick I've ever really noticed from Jay-z is just the 3 or 4 radio joints that really sell his albums. Jay-z has the uncanny ability to create radio anthems, but still give the streets what they want on the album. This is far different from what most rappers were doing only 2 years before Jay's first album was released. It used to be that an artist would make an album then choose a single. Nowadays rappers are making singles for their album. In my opinion, that mentality has the game messed up. That is the main reason why we have so many club records on the radio today; record companies want to follow this blueprint for success. I think that this concept is a stain on hip-hop that started with Notorious BIG and Bad Boy that Jay-z really took and perfected. The radio singles are what really catapulted Jay into superstardom; however it was his truth and sincerity which kept him their.

In conclusion, I consider Jay-z to be the best rapper thus far. No other rapper has been as consistent, or as versatile as Jay-z with the same level of skill that he brings. I will end this piece quoting a verse of Jay-z’s from the song “Hovi Baby”:

I'm so far ahead of my time, I'm bout to start another life/
Look behind you, I'm ‘bout to pass you twice/
Back to the future and gotta slow up for the present/
I'm fast, ni**as can't get past my past/
How they propose to deal with my perfect present?/
When I unwrap "The Gift & the Curse" in one session/
Ain't no livin person can test him/
Only two restin in heaven can be mentioned in the same breath as him
Seven straight summers, critics might not admit it/
But nobody in rap did it, quite like I did it/
If you did it I done it, before, you get I had it/
Got mad at it and don't want it no more/
And that goes for everything from flippin’ that raw/
Flippin’ whores, flippin’ vocal chords, don't get it twisted/
Get it right, did it different, did it better, did it nice/
Did the impossible then did it twice (get it right)/

Jay-Z är bättre än Em. Fråga eminem, han kommer säga samma sak.

Nazeem?
