Phife & JayDee - If men are dogs
Satt och lyssnade på lite brända skivor från förra sommaren och hittade den här otroligt feta låten. Helt galet att den aldrig släpptes offentligt... Saxat från vinyladdicts.blogspot.com The second white label release I’d like to mention is a 12” from Malik Taylor a.k.a. Mutty Ranks a.k.a. Phife Dawg from A Tribe Called Quest. I believe the two tracks featured on this single, “If men are dogs (then what are you)” and “Brooklyn Queens connection” were recorded around the same time as the material for ATCQ’s final album, “The love movement”. Despite the fact that the labels don’t list the production credits, I can tell you that both tracks were done The Ummah (Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jay Dee). If I’ve been informed correctly this 12” was released exclusively in Japan, which is probably why not too many cats are aware of this dope release. “If men are dogs” is a radio friendly joint on which Phife seems to be in his best form, addressin’ some of the problems he has with his girl: ”I always thought highly of you / But now I see you got a lot of growing up to do / Treated you like a queen, even took you on tour / Now your inquiring my ass, want to act insecure / And to top it all off things weren’t gettin’ no better / Prank calls to my ex, runnin’ through all my letters / I do anything so that your monkey ass will be pleased / I’ll be gone for seven days, back then your ass couldn’t breath / So tell me what’s the reason for the tricks up your sleeve / Oh God I wonder what was she tryin’ to achieve/ If men are dogs then what the hell are you/C'mon don't even front you got skeltons to!”
