Star bara Cold, Medium, Hot and Very Hot pa maskinen.

can you guys please tell me what warm/cold and hot/cold means?

The first temperature listed is the washing temp, and the second is the rinse water temp.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

The first word is what the wash cycle is washed in: cold water, warm water, hot water.

The second word is always cold. That's the rinse cycle. It uses cold water to rinse your clothes.

For stained clothes and whites, use the hottest water possible. You usually use cold for 100%cotton items that you don't wanna shrink. Use the labels on your clothes to determine the appropriate settings.

For laundry instructions that say MACHINE-WASH-COLD, -WARM, or -HOT, what should the water temps be, respectively? How many degrees F and C?

Loosely 30C / 70F, 40C/105F and 60C/140F, respectively.
Actually, it's a little more complicated than that.

The temperatures are given as a range for each of the qualifiers "cold", "warm" and "hot" and there are some subtle differentiations in the symbols which should be used depending upon which point in this range is intended.

The referenced source gives detailed information, but essentially, the full ranges are:
cold: 30C, 65-85F
warm: 40C, 105F
hot: 50C - 95C, 120F-200F

Further explanation together with symbols for these and other washing care symbols is provided by the textileaffairs link.

Does hot water damage many clothes? My hot water is quite hot, around 140.

A: Cold is fine for most things
Cold water alone is fine for most things, especially if you have an auto temp washing machine, which adjusts the warmness of the water if cold water alone is way too cold for the soap to dissolve and do its best work. Hot water is best for killing germs, but if you use a clothes dryer on the high heat setting, that'll usually do the trick. Occasionally, I like to add a little bleach to my whites. Bleach is also good at killing germs, but not good for synthetics. When I have some synthetics I think need a little extra cleaning oomph, I add about 1/4 cup white vinegar to the wash cycle of a large load. Vinegar is an excellent additive, is cheap, easy to get, and freshens up things that you don't want to bleach. I mostly wash in cold water. My washing machine adjusts the temperature if the cold water is way too cold for the detergent to dissolve. Most newer machines are like that, but if your machine is not and you have bitterly cold winters, maybe some warm water wouldn't hurt in the wash cycle, in which case I'd turn it to hot only, let it do a little filling, add my soap and then switch it to all cold. I think washing in general wears clothes out. Hot water isn't good for keeping colors bright, they tend to fade more the hotter the water.
